Sol Gabetta celebrated her debut at the age of 20 years at Lucerne Festival in 2001 and received outstanding critiques from the press. The highlight in her still young career is the prestigious Credit Suisse Young Artist Award received in 2004. It is one of the most valued awards for young musicians. The ECHO award followed in October 2007 in the category “Instrumentalist of the year”. Sol Gabetta received this important award of the German Phono Academy (in a tv show of the German public television ZDF with millions of viewers) for her debut disc which was released in summer 2006 by Sony BMG and reached the top ten of the classic charts right away.
Already in previous years Sol Gabetta received various awards, e.g. at the ARD competition in Munich or at the Tschaikowski competition in Moscow. Besides her increasing presence in concerts throughout Europe and Japan she will debut in the USA and in Australia next year. In June 2008 she will join star cellist Yo Yo Ma on a tour in the USA and play in his double concert under the direction of Leonard Slatkin.
After studying 10 years with the cellist Ivan Monighetti in Madrid and Basel, Sol Gabetta completed her solist’s study at the Hanns Eisler conservatory in Berlin. Since autumn 2005 she is assistant professor at the conservatory in Basel.
Sol Gabetta plays one of the rare and precious violoncellos of G. B. Guadagnini of 1759.
